The garden club is sponsoring a citizen science project called Project Blossom for gardens on Orcas Island. Garden club members and the greater Orcas community can volunteer to plant daffodils in their home gardens. All the daffodils will be planted on a specific day in the fall and participants will observe and report the date that their daffodils bloomed.

What are we asking you to do?
No previous knowledge or experience is necessary to participate in the project. We’ll provide the bulbs and instructions on how, when, and where to plant your bulbs. To get started, all you need to do is provide your address and agree to plant your bulbs on the day specified. When they begin to bloom, just let us know! What we hope to learn? Planting zone charts are too general to rely upon. Since Orcas has so many microclimates that effect the bloom time of flowers, this project will help gardeners understand the differences unique to their neighborhoods. The final results will be displayed on a map on the Orcas Island Garden Club website so the whole gardening community on the island of Orcas will benefit from the information. |
